ABOUT US

In 2001 Marc Johnson, the North Northumberland Rural Transport Officer, approached people in the Rothbury area to see if there was interest in setting up a community transport programme.

Mike Carr, John Lazarus and Becky Torrance formed a group with Marc and surveyed 500 households in the valley about their transport needs. This led to the formation of Upper Coquetdale Community Transport (UCCT). Madeleine Holloway joined the group in 2003 and has been the Hon. Secretary since 2006.

UCCT gained charitable status in July 2004. We applied for funding and bought a minibus with money mostly from the Countryside Agency, with some from Rothbury Gold, Alnwick District Council and Northumberland County Council.

We have continued to be successful in raising funds to support our activities, with major grants coming from organisations including the Reece Foundation, The Ballinger Trust, Northumberland County Council, and Tarmac, through its Harden Quarry at Biddlestone, as well as many others.

In 2016 a grant from the Department for Transport enabled us to buy a new minibus, while in 2020 we used another grant, this time from The National Lottery Community Fund, to buy a second vehicle – a hybrid estate car – for use when we just need to transport small numbers of people.
